Before we moved to sunny California, we lived slap bang in the middle of Salisbury Plain. Our evening entertainment was listening to tanks whizzing across the Plain as the army practiced their maneuvers. Or a Hercules would fly just above the roof of our house, its rear doors open ready to deploy practicing parachutists.
The other entertainment, of course, were the local pubs of which there were many and some were chosen because of their food, some their atmosphere, some their ability to create the best roaring fire on a cold winter’s night.
One pub I didn’t make it to was The Beckford Arms. A good friend of mine highly recommended it but, for one reason or another, we never made it there.

So, yesterday as I was browsing The Times Online, I was chuffed to find a review of The Beckford Arms, I’d learn all about the pub from a proper, professional restaurant critic.
I was even more delighted to read on and find out that the guy in question couldn’t remember his visit to the pub.
The review is really worth a read.
Next time I’m back in the UK, I really want to try The Beckford Arms and this time with Giles Coren, he sounds like my kind of guy.

Excellent. I love Giles Coren. Pleased to hear he’s getting married, too – I remember a couple of years ago he kept hinting about being really morose because he split up with someone.
Brilliant review! I’ll be gooseberry when you arrange that (drunken) lunch with Giles…
Oh, brilliant review. Suddenly feeling quite nostalgic for a boozy evening at the pub… and no kids to look after the next day either…
Have now found very good excuse for weekend excursion out of London – thank you!
