Holiday cards

November 26, 2010

So, if I send you a Christmas card with a photo of my two boys grinning out at you – will you think I’ve jumped the shark?
I’ve bought the box of photo cards ready for the picture to be inserted. No, we haven’t posed for a family shot with an official photographer in matching [...]

And yes, that’s my pumpkin turned into a turkey.
Happy Thanksgiving!

The War Graves Photographic Project

November 12, 2010

It was Veteran’s Day here in the US yesterday and, of course, Armistice Day in the UK.  The Guardian featured a fascinating article on The War Graves Photographic Project.
‘The aim of The War Graves Photographic Project is to photograph every war grave, individual memorial, MoD grave, and family memorial of serving military personnel from WWI [...]

Expat blogging – a Chicago adventure

November 10, 2010

I first moved to California when I was 21.  I was invincible.  I moved out of my flat in London, handed in my notice at work and with a couple of suitcases arrived to start my new life in the States.
I was so confident of what I was doing and yet had no one to [...]

Pawn not porn

November 5, 2010

I’ve been struggling with a word over here in the US for awhile now but have been far too British to write about it. But here goes…
It’s pawn.
No, we haven’t come upon hard times and I haven’t needed to get cash fast. The reason we’ve been getting confused over pawn is because of [...]

Why we live on the Balboa Peninsula

November 4, 2010

There are many reasons NOT to live on the Balboa Peninsula.

It is never quiet.  There is always noise, someone’s garage door going up, a skateboarder whizzing by, [...]

A boy and his pumpkin

November 1, 2010

I may have decided to dress up as a psycho killer this year and dress my pumpkin up in similar garb, but I’m still a big softie and couldn’t resist giving my pumpkin a hug.

Halloween was so much fun this year because we bumped into so many more people that we knew…neighbours and school friends.  [...]

Halloween Houses

October 28, 2010

I’ve been in stealth mode, driving around neighborhoods and snapping decorated houses with my phone. Inspired by Nappy Valley Girl’s photos, here are two of the best ones.

Top marks to this house, it can’t be easy to pop a pirate ship on your front lawn.  I did actually post a photo of it in my [...]

Lake Mead Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail

October 26, 2010

Most people check into a Las Vegas hotel with sequins, high heels and bling.  We arrived in Vegas last weekend with four mountain bikes.  Our objective was to ride the Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail, an eight mile round trip ride from Lake Mead to Hoover Dam.
Driving through the area last August, we stopped to do [...]

Hybrid preferred

October 25, 2010

I drive a Ford Hybrid Escape. Apart from the excellent gas mileage, I can’t say I love it. It’s not that powerful. The engine groans whenever we go up an incline and although I’m sounding like Jeremy Clarkson, I need more POWER!
That’s until I saw this:

There’s a new Fresh and Easy store (Tesco in [...]
