Liberty of London…at Target

by Lorna Harris on February 26, 2010

Liberty at Target? Really? OK Target, you’ve finally got my attention.

I’m not a huge Target fan.  It’s too big, too overwhelming and I just feel completely lost when I’m there.  Plus, I end up buying a whole lot of cheap stuff that I don’t need.  It’s that ‘Holiday’ area that always gets me.  At the moment it’s Easter, last week it was Valentine’s Day.  I just can’t get by that section without the odd thing or too.

Target was somewhere I popped into now and then when I needed a birthday present for a child’s party.  Then they introduced a Boots section.  As I blogged at the time, I was so happy.  And that’s made me go in more often.  My bathroom is now full of Boots products, thanks to Target.  It’s a small thing but it’s a bit of home, which I love.

Last night, in between watching America dominate the Olympics, an advert for Liberty of London came on.  It was all lovely swirly florals, very Liberty, their classic prints whizzing across the screen.  It caught my eye immediately.  I love Liberty but have never seen it here in the States.  I was curious as to where this was going to lead.

Liberty at Target!  No way!  Apparently, coming on 14th March, Liberty clothes, home accessories and garden items will be available.  I’m assuming at fantastic Target prices too.  I’m so there!

If you’re American and haven’t heard of Liberty of London, take a look at their site.  It’s just the most beautiful shop ever.  Not only are their products amazing, their flagship store in London is just wonderful.   It’s a Grade II listed (ie very old and precious) Tudor building constructed from the timbers of two ships, it’s somewhere all visitors to London should pay a visit to.  Forget Harrods, go to Liberty instead.  By the way, I had no idea it was constructed from two ships but just did a quick search on wikipedia and found that out, fascinating!

I don’t know who the wheeler dealer person is at Target who is making these wonderful US/UK collaborations but keep it up.  I love it!  And will become a dedicated Target shopper because of it.  I will come into your massive store and get lost in your many aisles instead of giving up after aisle three, heading to the Boots section and then leaving, which is my usual behaviour.

And one hint to that person, could you have a chat to Waitrose?  If you introduce a Waitrose section to Target, I will come everyday.  I promise, without fail.  I will do all my food shopping at your store.

Waitrose at Target.  Wouldn’t that be wonderful?

Or Marks and Spencer even.

This is not just Target; this is M&S Target.

(That’s a very British reference at the end, my apologies to my American readers!)

M&S Target….now that would be something. And Waitrose – although that would be quite a leap from the weird selection of ‘frozen breakfasts’ and other foods they already stock.

I was in Target the other day admiring the Boots aisle; they definitely make it feel more like an upmarket beauty brand here. Boots would do well to learn from their presentation, because their own UK stores could definitely do with a facelift.

I think the Waitrose foods might go off before they got there! :-)

@nvg Yes, Boots really does seem quite luxurious in Target and I didn’t buy it as much in the UK.

@Jen I’m sure a Waitrose ciabatta would be OK after a few days at sea!

I agree with you re spending money in Target. It’s hard not to. Something to do with the size of the place. Even if you only went in for a couple of items, it’s just too big not to see other stuff you need.

Sounds like an IKEA type shop but with nice things – Liberty’s! that is quite something!

Hey, maybe Ocado will deliver to the US in due course? That would solve the Waitrose issue at least!

Target is in my top 3 of things I miss most of all. I think if they would only just bring it to England I would be happy to live here forever. Maybe with all these UK brands filtering in they have a master plan… but I suspect my love of Target has to do with growing up with it, I know where everything is. And their upmarket brands that normally can only be found at department stores (Calphalon, Kitchenaid, etc.) are really worth a trip.

I love target, I love to just wander through its bright clean aisles of lovely stuff. Now that they are going to have Libertys things I may have to go and live in my local target store!

It was a great treat for us to go to the LOndon store, my Mum is a great seamstress and made me lots of lovely liberty print dresses!

Sunshine for me at mine, not that you need it! (sorry if you got it already) http://geekymummy.blogspot.com/2010/02/sunshine-award.html

I’ll never forget the day I walked into the Boots aisle in my local Target. I think there were angels singing in the background! Liberty at Target is one thing, but M&S Target?? Oh, oh, oh. Perhaps we could get a petition together?

I only lived in London a year or so but I still miss Marks & Spencer when it comes to buying underwear.

Totally agree with you about Target – i have a total love/hate relationship with that store. I always buy far more than I intended and so much of it is tat. Last year they sold Orla Keily kitchen accessories tho, which was wonderful. I dithered over a couple of items and by the time I went back to get them 2 weeks later the whole line had sold out, never to return.

Now there is going to be Liberty, eh? Good to know (well, not good for my wallet, possibly). It really is just as well they don’t sell Waitrose or M&S products there tho…I dread to think what I would end up spending!
