My two boys are having fun being the only British boys in Balboa. My oldest son, Declan, is developing a really good sense of humour, which I’m happy about. I really appreciate someone with a wicked sense of humour, the wickeder the better.

Declan has been attending his new school since September and needless to say has stood out quite a bit because of his English accent. Last week during Sports, the teacher asked him to come up to the front of the class and demonstrate a few British warm up exercises before they started. This surprised my son, warm up exercises aren’t exactly a cultural thing and athletes from most countries do the same stretches before they start sprinting off. At the Olympics you don’t see French athletes bending one way and the Portuguese another way.
So, my son made one up. Declan explained to the teacher that it was called ‘The Dying Tuna’ and then lay down on his stomach flapping around like a fish in the final throws of life. The teacher then asked the rest of the class to follow Declan’s demonstration. The entire class got down on the grass and performed ‘The Dying Tuna.’
I’m intrigued to know whether the teacher actually believed this was a British warm up exercise or not. But it may catch on. I can just imagine him taking The Dying Tuna onto his next class and before you know it, it’ll be a regular part of the sports curriculum.
If you see the athletes performing it in London in 2012 – you saw it here first.

Did you get a chance to read this article? I thought of you after reading this post:

Great post! I love when Declan demonstrates the Dying Tuna. He could make his own workout DVD!
@Debra thank you! That’s a great article in the Guardian. I was impressed at the school over here and the amount of computer work the children do. They haven’t been taught about Twitter yet though.
