Fall has arrived in California. We no longer have sun all day, every day. Sometimes the sun doesn’t appear until 11am, on bad days noon and on really, really bad days we could have clouds all day long.
I’m completely and utterly ashamed to admit that we’re all bloody freezing!
Yesterday it dipped below 65 degrees in the early morning and it was like a ‘snow day.’ The boys were peering out of the window over their cereal bowls asking why it was so cold and gloomy outside. There was great indignation over the fact that I was expecting them to cycle to school in such terrible conditions.
We have no cold weather tolerance left whatsoever. And this is after just one year.
If we were still in England, our porch would be full of wellies, umbrellas, thick coats, rain jackets, hats, gloves, scarves. Here, we’re all pulling out a sweatshirt in the evening, maybe a pair of jeans if it starts getting really chilly. This is our winter wardrobe. Flip-flops are fine all year round, just a bit chilly in the morning and evening.
And yet, now I have two boys who consider it to be a bad weather day if the sun doesn’t shine. They’ll never be able to live in the UK again; they’re ruined for life.
We do have one winter outfit we need to buy, full body wetsuits. The boys are still boogie boarding even though the water’s a little cooler now.
Life is tough in California, when the weather dips below 70 degrees, you reach for your winter wet suit, head to the beach and carry on the best you can.

I’m sorry to say that I’m one of those CA weather wimps, too! I got home from work last night, kicked off my heals, and hurried to find the thickest, fuzziest socks I own. It was pretty ridiculous. : )
heavy sigh! Seattle weather is similar to Londons. I not feeling your pain as I stare out at the rain…
It’s getting a lot colder in NY, a lot more quickly than I expected. My landlady just came around to remove the airconditioners – summer must be over!
Oh, I can only dream about that kind of temperature. But I’m sure I would complain about it all the same.
Stop, you’re making me homesick…
Hi Lorna! I found you totally by accident, in fact, I can’t even remember how I ended up here! I was actually posting on UK Yankees website, someone had a link to their Blogspot, they had links to others and so on and so forth! I found it very amusing that you are a UK native living here…I’m a SoCal native (OC native, actually) TRYING to get to the UK! Best of luck, love your blog
